Norway presents an air travel system that is both modern and well-connected, with services offered to a host of international destinations. Using connections available from the major airports, travelers can reach virtually anywhere in the world.
As a country, Norway is known for its ability to deliver customer services of the highest quality and for its reputation of punctuality. Travelers can expect to benefit from a smooth and reliable experience when making their way through the country’s airports.
The main international airport in Norway is located near Oslo, the nation’s capital. Oslo Airport (OSL), also known as Oslo Gardermoen Airport, is the largest airport in Norway and also serves as the hub for the country’s national flag carrier, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) and low-cost carrier Norwegian Air Shuttle.
Scandinavian Airlines is a joint-venture carrier that operates as the flag bearer for not only Norway, but also Sweden and Denmark. Norwegian Air Shuttle, as a low-cost airline, does not provide flights to as many international destinations as SAS; however, it maintains regular services to over 150 locations across Europe and Scandinavia.
By using Oslo Gardermoen Airport, travelers can easily reach destinations as far abroad as North America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia in addition to several countries throughout Europe. The airport is well-connected with the Oslo city center via high-speed railway, the Gardermoen Line. It is one of the busiest airports within the Nordic region, handling more than 25 million passengers annually, by some estimates.
Located in the northern region of Norway, is Tromso Airport (TOS) on the island of Tromsoya, northwest of the city of Tromso. It is the fifth-busiest airport in Norway and a focus airport for the airlines of Lufttransport, FlyViking, and Wideroe. It is conveniently located close to the Tromso city center (5km) and easily accessible using airport buses, local transit, taxis and car rentals.
The Tromso area is well known for its scenic landscapes and efficient public services making it a great jumping off point for a pursuit through the beautiful countryside of northern Norway.
Although not highlighted in the map above, there are several other major international airports located in the southern region of Norway that can provide as useful gateways for exploring the country.
One of these is the second largest airport in Norway, Bergen Airport (BGO). It is located in Bergen, on the west coast along the Atlantic Ocean. This airport offers regular flights to destinations throughout most of Europe and many parts of Scandinavia and the Nordic region.
Located to the south of Bergen Airport, along Norway’s west coast is Stavanger Airport (SVG). Stavanger Airport mostly serves the southwestern portion of the country with regular services offered to many European and Scandinavian cities and destinations.
Further to the north is Trondheim Airport (TRD). With services offered to many destinations throughout Europe and the Nordic countries, it is another convenient option for travelers exploring this part of the world, and one of the busiest airports in Norway.
